No Job Without a Specialist Language Exam! For some time now, medical associations in the federal states have required the so-called specialist language exam. This exam assesses both professional and linguistic (C1 level) competence of foreign doctors. It lasts one hour and costs between €300 and €500.
Although the procedure for the exams slightly varies from state to state, the general process is as follows:
- Detailed medical history interview (20 minutes)
- Filling out a medical history form or writing a brief medical report (20 minutes)
- Doctor-to-doctor conversation. Presentation of the patient with follow-up questions from the examiners (20 minutes)
In a 4-week preparation course for this specialist language exam, we cover up to 50 cases and discuss them in detail. Participants learn questioning techniques, note-taking structure, coherent dialogue management, and professional presentation. Additionally, we practice terminology (Latin/German – German/Latin) in group sessions. Contemporary medical-academic texts are also written, and grammatical deficiencies are identified, explained, and corrected where necessary.
Objective of the Crash CourseThe aim of this crash course is to acquire specialist language competence to perform convincingly and confidently in the exam. A B2 level certificate is required to attend this preparation course.
Duration, Scope, and RequirementsThe course takes place 4 times a week, with each session lasting 5 teaching hours. This totals 80 teaching hours over 4 weeks. A good B2 certificate is required for course admission.
